Richfield Dual Language School Welcomes Amity Interns

The exchange program through the Amity Institute allows interns to gain experience and learn about other cultures.

Since 1962 the Amity Institute has worked to provide university students and recent graduates with educational internships at primary and secondary schools in the United States.

Earlier this year, Richfield Dual Language School welcomed four such interns from Spain. According to Principal Marta Shahsavand, the Amity Intern Program focuses on sharing language and culture.

"The program is designed for those who want to gain teaching experience and participate in American culture and community," she told Patch in an email. "Amity Interns come from more than 20 countries to participate in a life-changing experience."

The four interns stationed at RDLS are: Loretto Olmos (psychology), Belen Junquera (music), Liliana Sanz (psychology) and Irene Mainez (early childhood education).

"An important part of the exchange program is that participants return home and share what they have learned," Shahsavand said. "Hosting an international visitor for an extended period of time can be a life-changing experience!"

The program does not offer full-time employment, and is not for those whose primary purpose is to work or study full-time in the U.S., she said. Interns will interact with your family, friends and neighbors, creating international friendship and cultural understanding on a local level.

Interns are also prepared to share their culture through food, music, and personal interaction, and according to Shahsavand, living together on a daily basis breaks down pre-existing stereotypes.
