Editor's Note: The following is an press release.

Long-time coach Greg Trebil has announced that the 2011-12 season will be his last on the bench—but not his last with the AHA hockey program.

Trebil’s retirement from coaching is part of a major shift in duties, as he prepares to assume the role of Director of Hockey Operations for both the boys and girls programs. At the same time, Stars boys associate head coach Billy Hengen will become the new boys head coach. Both positions become effective in 2012-13 season.

In his new role, Trebil will lead the development and implementation of both Stars hockey programs and be responsible for all “off-ice” operations. He will have oversight of player and coach development programs, hockey alumni relations, and program promotion.

“Coach Trebil has established a great tradition of hockey here at AHA," said Michael Kautzman, director of activities for Holy Angels. "We are grateful for all he has done, and we’re looking forward to his new role in helping to maintain and build the best of the tradition in both our boys and girls programs.”

As head hockey coach, Trebil led AHA to five state tournament appearances and two state championships, five section championships, and more than a dozen conference championships. He has mentored many young players who excelled in college and professional hockey careers. For example, about 50 of his players have competed at the college level, some 30 of them in Division I programs. Among them, at least 10 became collegiate team captains.

Hengen is a 2000 AHA grad and hockey alumnus. He became AHA’s associate head coach last March. Prior to that, he coached at Holy Angels for three seasons from 2006-2009 as an assistant coach. He was an assistant coach at Providence Academy, in Plymouth, MN during the 2010-11 season helping Providence to its best season finish to date with an 18-6-1 record. In 2007, he coached the Blake B Bantams who won the Minnesota State Tournament. Hengen remains the AHA all-time leading goal scorer with 102 goals, 118 assists, and 220 points.

Hengen played college hockey at St. Cloud State University from 2002 to 2006 where he finished as the top three-point getter and assist leader on the team for three straight seasons. He also tied the school record for most points in a weekend series with eight points against Yale/Princeton.

“It is an honor to be on the bench with Coach Trebil in his final season as head coach, and I’m looking forward to working with him in a new role next year,” Hengen said. “He is a legendary coach in Minnesota hockey, and this change in roles will provide a unique and special opportunity for Coach Trebil and Holy Angels. I’m looking forward to leading the boys program as head coach next season, carrying on the tradition, and incorporating my ideas and philosophies into the hockey program.”
