Cultural Proficiency Workshop

The Family Stability Workgroup of the Richfield Community Council is hosting a free workshop to serve as an Introduction to Latino and Somali Cultures.

From 2 to 3 p.m. Garat Ibrahim and Abdimalik Ashkar will present on various aspects from the Somali culture including;

  • The civil war that forced many Somalis to leave their country
  • Why Somalis have settled in Minnesota
  • Islam and its role in Somali society
  • Gender and family roles
  • The importance of tradition and reputation in Somali culture
  • Educational attitudes, beliefs, and challenges

From 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Enrique Estrada will present on various aspects of the Latino culture including

  • The differences between the terms Latino, Chicano and Hispanic
  • The many cultures that are defined as Latino, Chicano and/or Hispanic
  • How Latinos are progressing in key measurements such as education, health and income
  • Family and gender roles in Latino families
  • Educational attitudes, beliefs and challenges
