Update: Rockwell Elementary Teacher Dies, Funeral This Weekend

"Rockwell lost a beloved staff member this week," Principal Kirsten McArdle said about the death of physical education teacher Don Wong.

P.E. Teacher Don Wong, who worked at Norman Rockwell Elementary in Redmond, died on Monday, according to school officials.

"Rockwell lost a beloved staff member this week," Rockwell Principal Kirsten McArdle said.

He was with the Lake Washington School District since 1976, and taught at Rockwell since 2000.

Students at the school constructed a memorial on Wednesday in the gymnasium and middle school and high school students have been stopping by the school to add to it, McArdle said. Others are welcome to do so, she said.

The funeral service for Wong is Sunday, Feb. 17, at noon at Riverview Cemetary, 0300 SW Taylors Ferry Road, Portland, OR 97219.

McArdle said she will be working with his family to plan a local celebration of his life.

A Facebook page dedicated to Wong was set up this week and this was posted Wednesday:

He always had a smile and a kind word for every child (and their parents, too.) My son's life is richer because Mr. Wong was a part of it. What a huge loss for the community.

He was a truly dedicated man who loved kids, and never let one feel bad because he or she had different abilities or strengths. The love the children showed him in their memorial is a fitting tribute to his impact in their lives. He will be greatly missed.

Brent Wingerson (1982 Rose Hill Jr. High) Don taught baseball hitting skills like no one else: ever. More importantly he left a great impression of how to be a man to community, family and self.
