Book Fairs Aim to Raise Money For Richfield Schools' Libraries

Barnes & Noble in Edina has become a partner in helping cash-strapped schools.

As budgets shrink, schools in Richfield and elsewhere are struggling to keep libraries up to date. Many are getting creative and partnering with the , to help raise extra funds through book fairs.

"We are always looking for ways to supplement the collections and buy the newest materials that students are interested in reading," said Melissa Glavas, media specialist with  .

"This benefit allows us to use more of our regular budgets for purchasing specific materials to support each school's curricular areas," she said. "These types of resources tend to be expensive and can use up a budget very quickly."

According to the Research Foundation Paper on school libraries, in addition to helping students be successful, libraries are crucial for getting kids to develop a love of reading and literature and allowing exploration of the world around them.

Proceeds from two benefits in December (dates are below) will likely be used to purchase fiction and nonfiction titles for the general collections.

During the book fair hours, Barnes & Noble will donate a portion of the proceeds from every sale earmarked to a school. Customers looking to participate must present vouchers at the time of purchase. Vouchers are attached as PDFs to this article.

Here are schedules for the book fairs focusing on Richfield schools:

Date: Dec. 3, 2011

Time: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Associated Events: The RHS band and choir will perform, while the Octogon Club will wrap holiday gifts.

Date: Dec. 8, 2011

Time: 5:30-8:30 p.m.

Associated Events: Storytime in Spanish and English and a hands-on Nook demonstration.

Date: Dec. 14, 2011

Time: 4-8 p.m.

Associated Events: School choir will perform at 6:30 p.m.; School principal will lead story time at 7 p.m.; Student Council members will wrap gifts from 6-8 p.m.
