Santorum Appears to be Richfield Caucus Winner

Richfield political parties caucus throughout the city Tuesday night.

Hundreds of Richfield Republicans gathered in nine, stifling hot classrooms for the state’s caucus night.

While exact numbers aren’t available yet, Rick Santorum appeared to be the winner in Richfield with Ron Paul coming in second, according to Craig Marston, GOP caucus chair for Senate District 63. In addition, nearly every major news network is predicting Santorum will take the state.

“I’m really surprised,” Marston said. “I would’ve thought Ron Paul would win out in our area.”

and Newt Gingrich are holding third and fourth place in Richfield, respectively.

Aside from caucus goers casting their preferential votes, a number of resolutions were brought forward for the Republican platform, with immigration, abortion, gay marriage and religion being popular topics. While a lot of discussion was happening in various precinct rooms, people seemed united in their opinions on important platform issues.

Among the hundreds who turned out were droves of young people, a sight that was applauded by some more seasoned caucus goers.

“I think it’s important to recognize all the young people here tonight,” one man said. “They are our future.”
