Richfield Public Safety: Beware of Home Improvement Scams

The Richfield Public Safety Department warns residents to be mindful of possible home improvement scams.

The arrival of spring gives way to the beginning of the home improvement season and Richfield Public Safety wants residents to be aware of possible scams. One home improvement scam has already been reported and while the suspects are in custody, the department released tips to help avoid the scams.

Residents should be skeptical if:

  • Someone offers to do work on your home at a discount;
  • A person offers to do the project with "supplies left over from another job;"
  • Cash payment is demanded;
  • The offer is only good for that day;
  • The contractor uses a vehicle with out-of-state license plates.
  • A seller won't give references or a warranty.

In addition, when hiring a contractor Richfield Public Safety suggests that you do research and compare bids, check references and check with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the Trade Council or the Homebuilders' Association to make sure the business is legitimate.

If you do choose a contractor make sure you agree on the price for the completed project, discuss a payment schedule, determine the estimated start and end dates and never pay for the entire project before it is completed.
