Richfield Man Dies After Canoe Accident in Lake Fort Snelling

After being pulled from the lake, the man later died at United Hospital Friday night.

A man from Richfield has died after a canoe accident Friday morning.

At approximately 8:40 a.m. Friday, the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a water emergency in Lake Fort Snelling.

Two men were fishing and their canoe capsized. One man swam to shore. The other man remained in the water for a time. 

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, Minneapolis St. Paul Airport Police and Minneapolis St. Paul Airport Fire Department responded. Firefighters in a boat rescued the victim from the water.

Both men were transported to United Hospital in St. Paul. The man who swam to shore is a Minneapolis resident and he was treated and released. The other man, who was rescued, was in critical condition and he died at the hospital Friday evening. The victim was a resident of Richfield.

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident. The name of the victim has not yet been released.
