Near Drowning in Richfield; 6-Year-Old in Critical Condition

An 8-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl were pulled from an in-ground swimming pool this morning.

At 10:56 a.m. Richfield Police responded to a home in the 7300 block of Garfield Avenue South.

Upon arrival, two neighbors led officers to an in-ground swimming pool where an 8-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl were in the water. According to a Hennepin County Sheriff's Office news release, the girl had fallen into the pool and the boy got in the pool in an attempt to help her. The pool was uncovered and was partially-filled with water, the release said. Two police officers and the neighbors got the children out of the pool.

The girl was unconscious and CPR was performed; both children were transported to HCMC. The girl is in critical condition. The boy was not injured, however, he was transported as a precaution. The children are cousins.

The Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and is investigating the incident. Richfield Patch will update readers if more information becomes available.
