Minneapolis Man Charged in Richfield Stabbing

Police say Patrick Donnell Bigby stabbed a man in the neck near 66th Street and Nicollet Avenue early Tuesday morning.

A 46-year-old Minneapolis man has been charged in connection with the stabbing that occurred in Richfield the morning of Tuesday, March 5.

Patrick Donnell Bigby was charged with two felony counts of second degree assault Wednesday, March 6.

According to Richfield police, officers and rescue personnel responded to a report of a stabbing near the area of 66th Street and Nicollet Avenue at 1:29 a.m. Tuesday.

When police arrived, the victim was found with a stab wound to the neck. Aid was administered and Hennepin County paramedic transported him to Hennepin County Medical Center for further treatment. Two pieces of a broken cane were found near the crime scene as well.

Richfield officers also set up a perimeter and initiated a K-9 track, according to police. The suspect, later identified as Bigby, was located hiding between two parked cars on the 6300 block of Nicollet Avenue.

According to the criminal complaint, the victim told police he and his assailant had rode the bus together. The victim said the man who attacked him asked for a dollar, which the victim gave to him.

When the two exited the bus on 66th and Nicollet, the victim said he was followed. The attacker then reportedly said, "I'm taking you [expletive]. Give it to me or I will stab you." The victim said he was hit multiple times and then stabbed by an unknown object. The assailant then took his money.

When Bigby was apprehended, money with blood on it was found in his pocket, according to the complaint. In a post-Miranda statement, Bigby admitted that he had an aluminum cane and that he had struck the victim with it two times before it broke.

Bigby is currently in custody, according to police.
