Going into Business is a Declaration of Independence

As we celebrate Independence Day this week, it’s a good time to reflect on that most American of activities: Business.

Ask entrepreneurs why they decided to go into business and chances are pretty good they’ll tell you they wanted to control their own destinies, to reap more of the rewards of their work, and to pursue happiness without seeking permission from the boss.

Think of it as a declaration of independence.

It’s something that this country’s founders would have understood, not just because they thought England’s King George III was a royal pain, but because they appreciated the entrepreneurial spirit. They may have been statesmen, politicians, and civic leaders in their spare time, but first they had to earn a living.

In honor of Independence Day, here’s a look at what the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did for a livelihood. Some signers did more than one thing, so will appear in more than one category.
