I Hope This Internet is Just a Fad.

If you did not already know, the picture above is what is known as an internet meme. There everywhere. Everything from Scumbag Steve to Overly Attached Girl, but it’s true definition is a humorous image, video, piece of text, etc. that is copied (often with slight variations) and spread rapidly by Internet users.

That being said, you may even think this will be a rant on Obamacare. Well, you would be wrong. (Okay, maybe a little ranting but I will try and curtail that.) No matter what your position is, it’s a law. We have to deal with it. In twenty years most people will just figure it was always part of life. The next generation won’t even care.

Let’s get the ranting out of the way. I do not like my Federal government telling me how to spend my money. They take their share and spend it on whatever they like for the betterment of the nation as a whole. I get that. However as an Army buddy of mine put it, “If the government told me I had to have something, as in a uniform, they provided it.” Now I have to pay for it or be punished. Call it a tax all you like, but it is a fine in all but name. Again… well, its law. I must abide.

Here is the true meat and potatoes of this blog. If you are going to argue on the side of something, for the love of all that is holy, please know some facts. As the meme states “Force Americans to have car insurance and no one bats an eye, Force them to get health insurance and everyone loses their mind.” Also, it should be noted that the person who I received this from made the statement that it was on the internet, so now maybe people would calm down and understand.

I cannot begin to tell you how disturbed I was by this. Okay, I am going to anyway. First off the federal government does not make (or more to the point, the operative word here is “force”) anyone get car insurance. Those are all State legislation. I know of at least three people who not only do not drive, but do not own a car. They are not “forced” to have car insurance. If I have made the choice to drive a car (You can own one without insurance. Just not drive it.) I am required to have insurance. I know no one that can opt out of not being alive. Well, with the exception of suicide, but that seems WAY to drastic an option.

As a matter of fact, I know of no insurance that I am required by law to carry. Not renters, property, auto, etc. Not to mention if I do drive without insurance, the police have to check for it if I am stopped or in an accident. They cannot just look it up in a database and send be a ticket.

So the argument in this meme is not only invalid, it is a dumb argument. Maybe I am taking this a little too serious, but so are those who are posting this, and I may have to abide with the law. I do not have to abide by stupid.

I LOVE a good debate. On occasion, I will even take on a view that is opposite of what I believe if the debate (Not argument) is well thought out and brings valid points. A good debate has even changed my mind now and again. For the record if you want to win a debate, you shouldn’t resort to name calling or respond with “so and so” said so. That means you lose already.

As another good side note, if you are getting the bulk of your political opinions and facts from a picture of Heath Ledger as the Joker on the internet, you high school has done you a great dis-service by allowing you to graduate.

I have no problems with what you believe or do not believe. You have that right. Your opinions are yours. Facts however, are what they are. Get your facts straight and maybe, just maybe, you can sway someone to understand your opinion.
