Richfield Alumni Raise Thousands for New 'Giving Fund'

The RHS Alumni Giving Fund helps support all Richfield grads in times of need.

More than 200 people came together to raise $8,440 for the new RHS Alumni Giving Fund at a special kickoff event Oct. 26 at the Richfield American Legion Post 435.

The goal of the fund is to provide assistance for any Richfield High School graduate or their family in times of extreme need. The idea grew out of a fundraiser the Class of 1992 held for a classmate's daughter who had just been diagnosed with cancer at its reunion last year.

"(Since the reunion) we've supported classmates spouses being diagnosed with breast cancer, a classmates daughter injured with medical bills racking up in the tens of thousands and, tragically, a classmates spouse passed away after a long cancer battle," Organizers Kari (Johnson) Mitchell wrote in an email release prior to the event. "The needs are many, but the money is not."

Mitchell and other organizers of the Oct. 26 event were hoping to raise a total of $10,000 to officially establish a nonprofit for the fund.
