Star Tribune: Squirrels Steal Candy from Kids' Eggs at Augsburg Park

They raided the Richfield park's Saturday 'egg scramble' event, the newspaper said.

Richfield park staff hid plastic eggs for the Augsburg Park 'egg scramble' Saturday, but not well enough to outfox hungry squirrels who got to the treats inside the eggs before kids could, according to the Star Tribune.

“We tried to cover all our bases," Richfield recreation supervisor Nick Thompson told the newspaper, "but we weren’t ready for the squirrels.”

The critters knew what they were after, the Star Tribune reported:

Ann Hoffer, also a city recreation supervisor, saw one wily thief scaling a tree with an egg in its mouth.

“I think they just saw brightly colored objects and thought they’d go for it,” she said. “They smelled the candy inside.”
