How to Help Families Affected by Newtown, CT School Shooting

People all over the world want to know how to help Sandy Hook residents following Friday's horrifying mass shooting.

In the wake of the unimaginable tragedy at Sandy Hook School Friday people from all over the world—in Connecticut, California, Canada and much farther away in Australia and India—sent an outpouring of support and want to know how they can help.

If you want to be notified via email of ways to provide comfort and support during this difficult time, please post in the comments section: "I want to help."

Patch will continue to update this article with ways to help—posting updates to the story as well as in the comments thread, triggering an email notification to commenters—and if you know of an organization or fundraiser providing assistance, let us know in the comments section, too.

Already the United Way of Western Connecticut, in partnership with Newtown Savings Bank, created the Sandy Hook School Support Fund to help provide support services to the families and community that are affected.

Check donations may be mailed to:

A former Sandy Hook Elementary School student named Ryan Kraft, also a longtime neighbor of the Lanza family, posted a Local Voices blog on Newtown Patch saying he set up a fund to help heal his community.

The link to the fund site is here—crowdrise.com/SHSRelief—and according to Kraft, all monies are directed toward the school's PTSA organization.

The funds are directed to the school's PTSA organization. Please help in any way you can.

Dear God,
May you give CT families the space to grieve. May you help them find peace to heal . May you guide them to find the comfort they seek. May you give us the ability to understand right from wrong. May you help us to seek the good and not the bad in this life. May you guide us to speak in truthy and love. May you give us the wisdom to face this tradgedy with grace. May you help all our leaders to have the courage to stand up for what is right. May you guide all our leaders in how to react to this tragedy. May God be with our nation as we walk through this tragedy. This is my Christmas Prayer for our nation and the world. And that is all I have to say about that.

I would like to help...is there anything we can possibly do to help the community in person? Maybe on Christmas eve? Possibly help the children who lost their siblings by writting to them or organizing days where young adults can spend time with them by doing fun activities play sports with them, maybe not right away but in the future basically to give them a shoulder to lean on...srzuccato@yahoo.com

This program was initially offered as a free trial, however the free trial time expired this week.Read More There is now a $24.99 charge to use the program. I am sorry for any inconvenience.

I would love to see Dunn Brother's come back. The parking is the major problem. But I hope theyRead More don't utilize the idea to eliminate lanes on Lyndale. It is already like driving behind a funeral procession - often as slow as 15-20 miles an hour. It is so annoying.

The fact that the parking lot is hidden makes it appear as though there is little parking, and IRead More think that hurts business there. I think Dunn bros would be awesome but the store is too small for them... The bean roaster would take up 1/2 the store...
Liberaltarian April 19, 2013 at 02:51 am
That's good advice. Also keep in mind that your reactions to the event probably won't be imitatedRead More while your children are young. But as they grow older, they'll subconsciously remember your reactions and that will greatly influence how they respond to these situations in adulthood. So if you're someone who started swearing at the TV about Muslim terrorists, or you wept for the victims, or you prayed for the souls of the perpetrators, you should expect your reaction to ultimately have far more influence on your child than the discussions mentioned in this article.
Diane Baum April 19, 2013 at 05:08 pm
Exactly, Chris Mau!!! Kids live what they learn at home. If we treat kids with respect, as well asRead More how we present the facts of life, kids will grow to become empathetic, meaning, they will care and have compassion for the world around them. If they see us cussing out different races, creeds and colors or origins, they will grow up mean, spiteful and cynical. It's all up to US adults people...who's willing to step to the plate and be that example? These children, they are our future....how they grow depends on us.
