VIDEO: Order Up! Japanese Pizza in the Valley

Looking for a little something different? Satay 2 Go offers a culinary exclusive.

Satay 2 Go, a small family restaurant in Apple Valley, is the only place in Minnesota where you can eat authentic Okonomiyaki, otherwise known as "Japanese Pizza."

This dish is a delicious variation on the more common Italian pie. Combined with egg, udon noodles and seaweed, the pizza is served with a choice of various meat fillings such as shrimp or beef. The key to the food is a generous serving of Okonomiyaki sauce topped with Japanese mayonnaise.

Corinne Tan, owner and chef at Satay 2 Go, explained that there are two versions of Okonomiyaki, one from Hiroshima and one from Osaka.

Her version is based on a recipe from Hiroshima which she learned from a friend who served the pizza in Japan. When served in Japan, the pizza is usually topped with crispy fish skins, but Corrine explained that most Minnesotans are not quite ready for that garnish, so she serves it with seaweed

I've eaten at Satay To Go several times and enjoyed it very much. There's a lot on the menu besides the 'Japanese pizza' – in quotes because, while very good, it's really not like pizza at all. There's delicious food from all over Asia, some familiar and some perfect for the adventurous eater. There are tables, so it's not all 'To Go.'
