I've never had a burger at Frenchman's but the burgers at Sandy's are VERY good. I used to like to wash one down with a Summit. Then I stopped in and they no longer had Summit. Did Sandy's ever get Summit back on tap? I can't believe I am saying this but I do believe that Frenchman's has better beer, and I'm a beer guy so......at least I can get a Sierra Nevada at Frenchman's. Any hometown bar should have at minimum one local beer, or at least a Minnesota made beer.

I will be trying a Frenchman's burger because of this article....and washing it down with a Sierra Nevada. :)

I have had burgers at both. I haven't been to the Frenchman in a while, but I have to say it was good. However, three weeks ago I discovered the Sandy's Sizzler. I'm hooked.

As most can probably tell where my loyalties lie, I am not sure this is a fair thing. Sandys and Frenchmans are two amazingly different creatures. I think it really rdepends on ones mood. And David, I am sorry to say, no Summit yet. Though we do have Grain Belt. That's pretty local.

You are completely right. They are two different "beasts." But nevertheless, they are both great hometown bars - and not being a chain is rare here. This contest should be fun!

I have been to Frenchman's many times as they are 3 blocks from us, but I've never been to Sandy's, though I keep thinking about it every time we pass by. Would it be an OK place to bring my kids in (in the afternoon, of course) for lunch to try the burgers? Or is it more someplace just my husband and I should try?
Kevin Parks May 15, 2012 at 06:18 PM
Laura, Kids are more than welcome. Though we do ask that it is before 9pm.

As far as a family place to take the kids for a burger and pop,,,, the crowd at Frenchmans has become "ruff place" as it gets later in the night. Just read the Richfield Sun Current for updates on the problems there. I will not take the team ther ever again!!!

Maybe we will try Sandys. It could be a "local" spot for us. The two times we went in there I got the impression it was a "cheers" type of place and we were not members of the crowd. It did not feel like a family nite out place, which is what we need. When we need burgers, we go to 5-8.

Sandy's is sorta like Cheers in the respect that they have a loyal following of regulars. These folks have been sitting in the same booth or bar stool, with the same people, eating the same order for a year, or two, or twenty. Add in Sandy's relatively low staff turnover, and you observe a dynamic where it's difficult for the staff and patrons to NOT bond to a degree. I was once a newbie too, and now my beer is on the bar waiting for me before I walk in the door (unless they're crazy busy). Try it again... and again... and before long you'll be right at home.

Hi, I only feel comfortable bring my kids to two places, Sandy's and The Shanty in Bloomington. But the Frenchman is where I go with the guys...I have seen kids there so I might try it!
