Developers to Begin Kmart Demolition After the Holiday

The vacant Kmart site will begin its transformation soon.

After months of planning and negotiating, Kmart site developers, Wellington Management Inc., will join in the initial transformation stages of northern Lyndale Avenue.

General site demolition to prep the property and building for total demolition will begin Tuesday, according to Joanne Henry, public relations representative Wellington Management Inc. Actual building demolition will likely begin after the Thanksgiving holiday and is, of course, subject to weather conditions. Tuesday also marks the two-year anniversary of the Kmart store closing.

, officially closed on the Kmart property and the two city-owned parcels it needed for the site's redevelopment Monday.

So what can residents expect to see once the Kmart site is finished? All the details are still unknown, however, .

Tanya Bell, vice president of Acquisitions and Development for Wellington Management Inc., told Patch the east building—which will likely include some food related retail as well as general retail—will begin being built along with the LA Fitness building this year. She said while several tenants are interested, no agreements have been met yet. In addition, she said the company is still looking for a anchor tenant for the third building, which will not begin construction until 2012. The third building will likely house a restaurant in addition to having smaller retail space.
