What Happened in Richfield in 2013?

As the year winds down, Richfield Patch is looking back at 2013.

Richfield Lady Spartans Fall in State Semifinals


After placing second in the 2012 state tournament, the Richfield girls basketball team earned another trip to state in 2013. 

Unfortunately, the team was unable to make it to the finals this year, placing third overall in Class AAA.

State Legislature Passes Gay Marriage Bill


After a 2012 constitutional amendment that would've banned gay marriage was defeated, the Minnesota State Legislature reversed state law to legalized same-sex marriage in the state.  

Richfield Sens. Patricia Torres Ray and Melissa Halvorson Wiklund, along with Reps. Linda Slocum and Jean Wagenius all voted in favor of the bill. 

The bill went into effect on Aug. 1, 2013.

All three incumbent school board members were not re-elected to new terms on Election Day 2013.

Sandy Belkengren, David Lamberger and John Easterwood will soon be replaced by Christine Maleck, Tim Pollis and Peter Toensing.
