Richfield's Own Shark Advocate Named Ocean Hero

Richfield's Sophi Bromenshenkel receives Oceana's 2011 Junior Ocean Hero Award.

Richfield's Sophi Bromenshenkel, a second grader at , was recently named recipient for her work in shark preservation.

The award honors youth who have made significant, ongoing contributions to ocean conservation, according to the Oceana website.

Bromenshenkel, who has also been called "The Shark Girl," raises money for shark preservation through hot chocolate and lemonade stands, among other things, throughout the year. As of March 1, 2011, she had raised and donated more than $3,500 to shark preservation efforts. She's even spent time at the University of Miami finding, tagging and tracking sharks. She also had a Tiger Shark named after her, which she can track online.

"Thank you to everyone who voted," Kori Bromenshenkel, Sophi's mom, said in an e-mail newsletter. "Sophi is very excited and we could not be more proud."

Sophi Bromenshenkel will be featured on Kare 11 news at 6 p.m. Wednesday night.
