Mark Your Calendars for Richfield's Hometown 4th of July Celebration

Richfield's five-day Fourth of July festival offers tons of activities for all to participate in.

Since 1980 Richfield has provided its residents, and any others who wish to participate, with a hometown .

In its earliest years the festivities were simple and included a parade and fireworks display on July 4, according to the Richfield Hometown 4th of July website. Since then, the event has grown into a famed spectacle around the Twin Cities; adding in the Miss Richfield competition in 1982, more elaborate fireworks by the year and eventually turning into the free five-day celebration it is today on its 10th anniversary.

Friday will kick-off the 2011 festivities. All events, with the exception of the Ambassador Coronation, will be held at . The schedule for this year's events is:

July 1

  • Carnival open from 4-11 p.m.

July 2

  • Carnival open from 4-11 p.m.
  • Family Night begins at 5:30 p.m. with a Kids Parade, with music from Kidsdance running from 5:30-8:30 p.m. The evening will end with the Movie in the Park event featuring the film "Despicable Me."

July 3

  • Carnival open from noon to 11 p.m.
  • Car Show from 1-5 p.m.
  • Street Dance featuring the Rockin' Hollywoods from 6-11 p.m.

July 4

  • Carnival open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Parade begins at 1 p.m. at 70th Street and Nicollet Avenue; ends at 66th Street and 11th Avenue.
  • Junior Ambassador Coronation begins at 6 p.m.
  • Kidsdance is back again from 5-9 p.m.
  • Fireworks begin at 10 p.m.

July 5

  • Ambassador Coronation at 6:30 p.m. at Richfield High School Auditorium.
