City Stay: A Non-Profit Focused on Community Trust and Cultural Understanding

City Stay is a unique organization that fosters cross-cultural awareness and sparks connections between various communities here in the Twin Cities.

City Stay is a new non-profit here in the Twin Cities. In the summer of 2013, City Stay is launching a program inviting local high school students ages 16-19 and Latino and Somali families to engage in a unique cross-cultural experience. Students of all backgrounds will spend three and a half weeks living with a Latino or Somali family right here in the Twin Cities. Meanwhile, students take classes covering their host family’s language and culture. Students also participate in a project or internship that further connects them with their new community. Through these experiences, City Stay provides experiential education that breaks down barriers and sparks unlikely connections between the diverse cultural communities of the Twin Cities.

Together, families and students learn about another local community and build intercultural communication skills. City Stay reduces community mistrust and social inequality in the Twin Cities by creating a safe environment to engage in dialogue and to develop meaningful connections. These relationships serve as an ongoing tool to build a more informed and connected community that fosters intercultural understanding in an increasingly diverse world.
