Rep. Ellison Says Regulations Will Create Jobs

Richfield's representative says businesses will have to hire employees to help them comply.

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) on Sunday said regulations do not kill jobs. Appearing on "UP with Chris Hayes," he said:

When we talked about increasing fuel efficiency standards, the industry responded, and they need engineers and designers and manufacturers, and they need actually more people to help respond to the new requirement.

I believe if the government says, look, we have got to reduce our carbon footprint, you will kick into gear a whole number of people that know how to do that or have ideas about that, and that will be a job engine. I understand what you mean, because if anything adds a cost to a business, you could assume that that will diminish that business's ability to hire. But I don't think that's actually right. I think what businesses want is customers and what—if they are selling product, if they have a product to sell they will do well even if they have some new regulations to meet.

Earlier in the show, host Chris Hayes asked Ellison about the controversy about Mitt Romney's religion; he is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Specifically, Hayes showed a clip of Rev. Robert Jeffress saying Romney belongs to "a cult."

Hayes asked Ellison, as a "non-Christian":

What is your opinion when you hear someone laying out so explicitly essentially a religious test for public office?

Ellison responded:

Well, what I think is that the Constitution says that Congress shall make no law establishing religion or abridging the free exercise thereof. Later on in the Constitution it makes a specific reference to what you said: No religious test for holding public office. So this seems to me an individual who needs to read the Constitution over again and try to appreciate what that means.

Hayes said Jeffress later said the Constitution does not allow for a religious test for public office, but people still can decide for our against candidates based on their religions.

Ellison said Jeffress is appealing to people's prejudice.

Overregulation and regulations based on questionable theories that unnecessarily drive costs are the problem. A good example is Ethanol and how it effects food prices. A competitive international market is off limits to the USA when our regulatory costs leave American businesses with radically higher prices regardless of their higher quality. Our trade imbalance is adversly effected. The cost of pharmaceuticals is much higher due to the FDA. Spiriva, for example, is two or three times higher here than in Europe or Canada. Many other necessary drugs and medical devices are caught up in this web. Some regulation is a benefit. Do we know where to draw the line? The earth is created for man, not the reverse. Radical environmentalism is a cancer in our society. It is just one of many supported by the " Congressman from CAIR". Now the race baiting radical is supporting the Anarchists and Anti-Capitalists demonstrating across the country. Comrade Keith needs to be retired. Minnesota had the nation's worst senator in Dayton, now we have two of the worst members of Congress in Ellison and McCollum. Can't wait to hear his comments on Gay Marriage at his mosque.

Government regulations does in fact create jobs. It forces companies to hire additional people just to make sure that the company is abiding by the new regulations. It also increases unnecessary public sector jobs. Neither of these jobs are benificial or productive. Ellison's belief is that we pay taxes in order to give people jobs. My belief is that we should be paying taxes to provide us with needed services.
Government regulation today is strangling businesses as they
