Richfield Public Safety Chief Barry Fritz will end his 36-year-long career Thursday and hand over the reigns to acting chief, Todd Sandell.

"I would like to personally thank the council and the citizens who are out there watching," Fritz said to the Richfield City Council and viewers Tuesday night. "One of the reasons I’ve been here for 36 years, is, well I love the work, but this community [and the council] has been so supportive. ... And I can't tell you how important that is."

Fritz, who is the longest-serving Richfield officer in department history, assured the council, city staff and residents there would be a smooth transition after his departure Thursday.

"There is not going to be any vacuum when I leave," he said. "One of my jobs as chief was to mentor my staff. The last thing I wanted to do is walk out the door and have them come in April 1 and wonder what to do."

Sandell agreed and said: "[Fritz has] been an excellent leader and mentor for 36 years. I’ve had the pleasure of working for him for 34 of those years and he’s prided himself on leading this department. ... The transition should go smoothly."

Fritz said his last day will likely be an emotional one and he wouldn't feel ashamed if he shed a few tears.
