PHOTOS: SEC Students Unveil Garden Project

Students in the Intermediate District 287 programs at worked with artist Anne Krocak for the 2011-12 school year to and a variety of mosaic and concrete pieces to go with it.

To celebrate their art, the students held an unveiling ceremony Wednesday to share their creations with the community.

Students started the project by visiting the Walker Art Sculpture Garden to do research on and learn about public art and sculptures. They studied artist Alexander Calder while creating wind chimes for the art garden and a mobile for the school.

They also designed and created clay tiles to put in their concrete stepping stone for the garden path, and made mosaic birdhouses and concrete sculptures with concrete sculpture bases to hold them. These were put together to create garden pole sculptures. Garden seating was created with concrete stools and benches that were finished with beautiful mosaics. The planting beds have been planted with vegetables by the students in the South Education Center Alternative high school in the building.

This collaboration was funded by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, which is funded by the Minnesota Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment.

The garden is completely open for viewing by the public.
