Replay: Community Chat About Undocumented People's Rights to Education and Loans

Richfield Patch's first live chat dives into the issue of immigrants and education.

Alicia, the subject of the recent article "Undocumented Richfield Mother Fights for Immigrant Students' Rights," joined Richfield Patch Editor Caitlin Burgess and writer Drew Miller Thursday to answer readers' questions about the issue of undocumented people having access to higher education and loans in the United States.

Readers were able to watch the chat in real time and participate in the discussion. The entire chat can be seen above.

Thank you Alicia for sharing your beautiful story.

MN does offer loans to anyone right? Sure some loans are not available for undocumented students (i.e. Federal ones) because of laws barring them from any sort of federal/state aid. However, the MNSelf loan is available to anyone right? And private ones are available of course.

Alicia, what is the real issue here in terms of access to financial aid? I think that since everyone pays taxes (citizen or not), everyone should have access to financial aid as many other students do.

What do you think about paying your taxes from working, buying things, etc, etc, and being limited to how you can finance your education?

I was not able to join the live chat, but just read throught the whole conversation. It was very interesting; there were a lot of things I did not know. I wish Alicia and other undocumented people the best in pursuing their dreams. It is wonderful that there are people and organizations out there to help people with this.
